Worker rescued from RCA Dome utility shaft (AP)
Firefighters rescued a workman trapped more than an hour in a utility shaft at the RCA Dome on Wednesday. The workman, who was not identified, was working on heating and ventilation equipment on the upper concourse in preparation for the Indianapolis Colts’ preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.

QB Robert Johnson to start for Arkansas (AP)
Robert Johnson is getting another chance to start at quarterback for Arkansas. Johnson, benched midway through last season when the Razorbacks needed a spark, was made the starter for 2006 on Wednesday night. Coach Houston Nutt’s announcement ended — for now — a three-way competition between Johnson, Casey Dick and prized freshman Mitch Mustain.

Overlooked TB Pittman key to OSU offense (AP)
Antonio Pittman had a spectacular 2005 season with little attention and fanfare. The Ohio State tailback ran for 1,331 yards — the 10th-best single-season mark in school history — and he’s at best the third-most recognizable player on an explosive offense led by quarterback Troy Smith and receiver Ted Ginn Jr.

Air Force assistant coach suspended (AP)
Air Force offensive line coach Pete Hurt has been suspended indefinitely after he allegedly struck a player during football practice last week. Athletic director Hans Mueh suspended Hurt with pay on Wednesday and launched an investigation. Fullbacks coach Paul Hamilton assumed Hurt’s duties and offensive coordinator Chuck Petersen is coaching the fullbacks.

Longhorns still not settled at QB (AP)
After months of team-imposed silence, freshman quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead faced the media Wednesday and the No. 1 question in the Texas training camp: Who’s going to replace Vince Young? Neither was ready to declare himself the front-runner in the competition. “That’s up to the coaches,” McCoy said in the players’ first interviews of the preseason.

Minnesota suspends RB Callender (AP)
The Minnesota Gophers lost another running back on Wednesday when junior college transfer Brylee Callender was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Gophers coach Glen Mason did not specify what rules were broken in a one-sentence new release on Wednesday evening, but the move further depletes an already thin backfield.

Colts rookie safety Addae falls ill during practice (AP)
Indianapolis Colts safety Jahmile Addae became ill during Wednesday morning’s practice and was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to undergo further tests. Addae, an undrafted rookie from West Virginia, gave the Colts a scare when he became lightheaded. By the afternoon, coach Tony Dungy said Addae was feeling better and his vital signs had returned to normal.
