NFL and NCAA Football Update… - Words flying as Browns prep for Bengals (AP)

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Kellen Winslow hasn’t lost any quickness. On Wednesday, he beat Chad Johnson to the punch. Before Cincinnati’s talkative, touchdown-making, free-spirited wide receiver had a chance to make any bold predictions for Sunday’s game between the Bengals and Cleveland Browns, Winslow offered his own guarantee.

Niners QB Smith shows progress in debut (AP)
Alex Smith acknowledges he couldn’t figure out the NFL in his first season. To be fair, the San Francisco quarterback didn’t have a whole lot of help — but that’s starting to change. Everybody knows the 49ers were awful last season, from their offensive line to their receiving corps. Smith, the first draft pick of coach Mike Nolan’s tenure, had a huge contract and a spotlight, but few talented…

Redskins miss injured CB Springs (AP)
Carlos Rogers strutted and did a little dance, an odd bit of celebration considering he had just been beaten by a receiver. As it turned out, the receiver, Troy Williamson, let the ball go through his hands, denying the Minnesota Vikings a sure touchdown. Rogers, trailing the play by a step or two, behaved as if he’d made an interception that won the game.

Branch complicates Seahawks’ game plan (AP)
Seahawks players were in the locker room after Wednesday’s practice, joking and showering. Coaches were in their break room, preparing for meetings. Deion Branch? He was still on the field, running extra pass patterns against cornerback Marcus Trufant. “That says a lot about his character, right there,” Nate Burleson said, pointing an admiring finger toward his new receiving mate.

The Houston Texans acquired running back Samkon Gado from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for Vernand Morency on Wednesday. The trade is pending both players passing physicals with their new team. NFL absolves Geathers for hit on Green (AP)
The NFL absolved Cincinnati defensive end Robert Geathers on Wednesday for his hit on Kansas City quarterback Trent Green, emphasizing quarterbacks are responsible for avoiding hits by sliding. Owens on Cowboys QBs: What controversy? (AP)
Here’s the best example yet of Terrell Owens living up to his vow of being “a better teammate” now that he’s on the Dallas Cowboys: He’s refusing to share his opinion about a brewing quarterback controversy between Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo. He even finds it funny he’s being asked. “Quarterback controversy?” he said Wednesday, rolling his eyes and laughing.

Bills S Vincent out for season (AP)
The Bills placed veteran free safety Troy Vincent on injured reserve with a hamstring injury Wednesday, ending his season in Buffalo. The Bills defense could be further depleted for Sunday’s game at Miami with linebacker Takeo Spikes listed as questionable because of a right hamstring injury. Reggie Bush says highlights will come (AP)
When members of the Archdiocese of New Orleans started referring to him as Saint Reginald, Reggie Bush suspected he was meant to play here — and play well. So far, so good, and so much more to come, Bush says. “I just felt I was close to breaking” a long run, Bush said Wednesday, recalling his workmanlike performance in the New Orleans Saints’ season-opening victory at Cleveland.

Saban defends Culpepper’s start (AP)
Nick Saban is no fan of statistics. The Miami coach knows Daunte Culpepper’s 18-of-37, 262-yard, two-interception debut in a 28-17 loss to Pittsburgh last Thursday wasn’t ideal. The same goes for Ronnie Brown’s 30 yards on 15 carries, although Brown did have two short touchdown runs. But Saban thinks those numbers shouldn’t be construed as a sign of serious problems going into Sunday’s AFC East…

Nugent trying to figure out kicking woes (AP)
NFL kickers have a difficult enough job simply fitting in. When that kicker is a second-round draft choice coming off a dismal game, well, finding a place to hide would seem a good idea. Mike Nugent has a better thought: He’s attacking the problems head-on. Nugent missed field goals of 34 and 30 yards and, even worse, blew an extra point in the New York Jets’ 23-16 opening victory at Tennessee.

When Rich Seubert talked about having fun in recent years, it usually had to do with the practical jokes he pulled: the backup guard is one of the New York Giants’ most notorious pranksters. Seubert will likely get a chance to have another type of fun Sunday when the Giants (0-1) travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles (1-0).
