Latest Football News… - Bengals get another tough opponent (AP)

Friday, October 20th, 2006

The Cincinnati Bengals survived a tough early schedule. They’re not doing as well against the softer middle part. A week after losing to previously winless Tampa Bay, the Bengals welcome a much better NFC South team, the Carolina Panthers, to Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. Subplot: Chad Johnson, who has just one touchdown catch this season against Carolina’s Steve Smith, who has re-energized the…

RB Chris Perry hoping to play Sunday (AP)
In their last two games, the Cincinnati Bengals have converted third downs about as often as Chad Johnson finds himself speechless. Yes, it’s that bad. And Chris Perry thinks he can help. The running back who excels on passing downs rejoined the team in practice this week, having recovered from the knee and ankle operations that wiped out his preseason and sidelined him for the first five games.

FBI agents questioned a 20-year-old Milwaukee man Thursday as they tried to determine who made apparently phony Internet threats of “dirty bomb” attacks at NFL stadiums this weekend. Milwaukee police contacted the FBI on Wednesday night about the man. “From the information we have, we believe he was involved to some extent, but we don’t know at what level,” said FBI agent Douglas E.

Latest Football News… - Bills still have confidence in QB Losman (AP)

Friday, October 20th, 2006

As J.P. Losman’s production has dropped, coach Dick Jauron’s confidence in the Buffalo Bills quarterback hasn’t wavered. Despite concerns of Losman regressing, Jauron is sticking with his belief that the third-year veteran will develop into a consistent starter over time. “I do believe J.P. is progressing,” Jauron said, with the Bills preparing to host AFC East-leading New England on Sunday.

RB James hopes new coordinator will help (AP)
Perhaps no back in NFL history worked so hard for so little as Edgerrin James did Monday night. After gaining 55 yards in 36 carries, no wonder he hopes a change in offensive coordinators this week will create at least a little more room to run. James, who has yet to have a 100-yard rushing game since coming to the Arizona Cardinals, said teams have loaded up against the run, and a shift in tactics…

Panthers lose Howard to personal issues (AP)
Carolina Panthers cornerback Reggie Howard, who had played little this season, left the team on Thursday for personal reasons. Coach John Fox said the team got a roster exemption to replace Howard but have not yet replaced him. He acknowledged Howard’s decision surprised him. “I’m not going to get into details,” Fox said.

FBI says NFL stadium threats were hoax (AP)
Internet threats of “dirty bomb” attacks at NFL stadiums this weekend were a hoax inspired by a writing competition between two men trying to come up with scary threats, a law enforcement official said Thursday. The threats, which were posted on a Web site last week and mentioned stadiums in seven U.S.
